New Lactation Benches Installed in Garden City

Garden City has taken a significant step toward supporting local families and promoting health equity with the installation of two new breastfeeding benches. These benches are now located at Stevens Park on Main Street and at the Community Church on 13th Street, providing safe and comfortable spaces for breastfeeding mothers.

This initiative was made possible through the generosity of the Finney County Local Health Equity Action Team (LHEAT), in partnership with the REACH Grant funded by the University of Kansas Medical Center.

“These benches are more than just seating,” said Callie Dyer, executive Director of LiveWell Finney County. “They are a symbol of our community’s commitment to supporting mothers and families, reducing barriers to breastfeeding, and promoting a healthier future for our children.”

Why Breastfeeding Matters

Breastfeeding provides numerous benefits for both infants and mothers, including improved immune health, reduced risks of certain illnesses, and emotional bonding. Publicly accessible breastfeeding spaces empower mothers to meet their feeding goals comfortably and confidently.

Building a Healthier Community

The installation of these benches is part of a broader effort to address health equity in Finney County. By ensuring that all mothers, regardless of their circumstances, have access to welcoming breastfeeding spaces, Garden City continues to create a supportive and inclusive community.

Residents are encouraged to visit the benches at Stevens Park and the Community Church, celebrating the progress toward a more family-friendly and health-conscious environment.
